Storm Cleanup After Severe Weather: Safety First, Then Hauling

What to do in the hours and days after a storm, in a safe order.

Safety first

Stay away from downed power lines, leaning trees and flooded areas. If you smell gas, leave and call the utility. Wait for the all-clear before you work outside.

Document everything

Take photos and videos of damage before moving anything. Note dates and make a list of damaged items. Keep receipts for emergency expenses.

Call your insurance company

Ask what is covered and what they need. Do not discard items until you know whether the adjuster needs to see them, except for items that are a health risk.

Dry out quickly

Wet carpet, padding and drywall can mold within a day or two. Remove soaked material and dry the space with fans and dehumidifiers.

Clear debris

Move limbs and fencing to a safe pile. Bag small debris. Use a crew for heavy items, trees and large piles.

Take care of yourself

Cleanup is exhausting. Rest, eat and accept help. We handle the heavy lifting so you can focus on repairs.

Our advice in one sentence

Stay safe, take photos, dry things out and let a crew haul the heavy debris.
