Move-Out Cleanout Checklist: Leave Nothing Behind but a Clean Space

What to clear, what to book and when, so move-out day goes smoothly.

Six weeks before

Walk each room and decide what moves and what goes. Start with the garage, attic and storage. Donate usable items and recycle what you can.

Four weeks before

Book a junk removal crew for bulky items you will not take. Schedule donation pickups. Order boxes and plan packing.

Two weeks before

Sort kitchen and closets. Set aside hazardous items such as paint, fuel and batteries and arrange drop-off.

The week of the move

Pack essentials separately. Confirm the time for your cleanout crew and the movers. Keep valuables with you.

The last day

Do a final walk-through of every room, closet and cabinet. Take photos for your records. Sweep and take out final trash.

Keys and utilities

Return keys, set utilities to close or transfer and forward mail. Keep copies of your final photos in case of a deposit question.

Our advice in one sentence

Clear first, move second, and book the cleanout crew early.

Questions

Quick answers.

Should I clear before or after the movers?

Before, to save on moving costs, or after, to catch leftovers. Many people do both.

Can you take what the movers refuse?

Often yes. Hazardous materials still need special handling.

Will you clean the home?

We leave it swept. Deep cleaning is a separate service.
